12th April 2025
From the very beginning of the Space Age, the UN recognized that outer space added a new dimension to human existence.

12 April 1961 was the date of the first human space flight, carried out by Yuri Gagarin, a Soviet citizen. This historic event opened the way for space exploration for the benefit of all humanity. In 2011, the General Assembly declared 12 April as the International Day of Human Space Flight to celebrate annually the start of the space era for mankind, and the vital role of space science and technology in achieving sustainable goals and enhancing well-being, while safeguarding the aspiration to use outer space for peaceful ends.
