Turning Learning into Impact - Locally & Globally
The UNAA NSW Student Program connects students with real-world projects that advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Through structured placements and project-based learning, students gain practical experience while contributing to meaningful social change in Australia and across the region.
Launched in 2023 in partnership with leading universities, the program supports students to develop professional skills, global citizenship, and a clear understanding of how their studies translate into action.

Why the Student Program Matters
Students increasingly need more than theory. They need practical experience, professional networks, and a clear sense of how their skills can make a difference.

The UNAA NSW Student Program responds to this need by offering:
-
Authentic, project-based placements aligned to real community needs
-
Exposure to the United Nations system and the SDGs
-
Opportunities to work across cultures, sectors, and disciplines
-
Structured supervision and peer learning in a supportive environment
In 2025 alone, students supported projects spanning education, health, gender equality, social inclusion, Indigenous futures, sustainability, and food security
What Students Do
Students work on defined, outcomes-focused projects that support UNAA NSW programs and partner initiatives. These projects may involve:
-
Research and analysis aligned to specific SDGs
-
Program design, evaluation, and improvement
-
Community engagement and resource development
-
Policy, advocacy, and education initiatives
The program uses a hybrid, project-based model, allowing students to balance study, work, and placement commitments while developing strong self-directed learning skills.

Placements are informed by recognised social work theories and ethical frameworks, including strengths-based practice, human rights approaches, culturally responsive practice, systems theory, and participatory action research.
Students benefit from:
-
Weekly group supervision
-
Peer learning and peer support
-
Structured reflection and skills development
-
Exposure to cross-sector collaboration and program management
This non-traditional placement model helps students become job-ready, adaptable, and confident working in complex, real-world environments
