UNAA NSW President, Dr Patricia Jenkings, and the entire UNAA NSW board are deeply saddened by the violent attack that occurred last night at Bondi Beach, a place that for so many represents openness, community, and the simple joy of being together. Our hearts go out to all those who have lost their lives, to those who have been injured, and to the families, friends, and first responders who are carrying the weight of this tragedy.

Violence in any form strikes at the fabric of our shared humanity. It creates fear, fractures trust, and challenges the sense of safety that underpins community life. At moments like this, it is natural to feel shock, grief, and anger, but it is precisely at such moments that our response matters most.

Australia’s strength has always lain in its openness: in public spaces that welcome everyone, in communities built on respect, and in a belief that difference is not a threat but a source of richness. Acts of violence seek to undermine these values. We must not allow them to succeed.

UNAA NSW calls on all Australians to come together in solidarity, to reject violence in favour of dialogue, and to respond not with division but with empathy. In the face of fear, we choose compassion. In the face of hatred, we choose understanding. And in the face of tragedy, we reaffirm our shared commitment to dignity, peace, and our common humanity.

This is a time to look after one another, to listen carefully, and to stand firm in the values that bind us together as a prosperous community.
